Take Care of the Heart of Your Home

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, don’t forget to show your HVAC system a little love! With routine preventative maintenance, you can save money, breathe cleaner air, enjoy increased comfort and help the environment. Here are 3 tips:

1. Change Your Air Filter Regularly

Air filters are a crucial, yet often overlooked part of a central HVAC system.  Air filters trap pet hair, dust, and other irritating particles so that your HVAC system delivers fresh, clean air back into your home. We suggest to visually inspect your filter every month to check for excess particle buildup. If the dirty air filter is completely layered with dust and debris, it’s a good idea to change the filter even if it hasn’t reached the end of its recommended lifespan. It’s important to the health of your family that your home’s air is clean. CTC offers multiple solutions for providing quality indoor air for your home.

2. Keep Your Vents Open

A common myth is by closing vents in unused rooms you save energy… however the opposite is true. When your HVAC system is installed, everything is adjusted so the right amount of air comes out of each supply vent and then returns back into your HVAC system through the return vents.

When you close off vents in unused rooms, you’re actually messing with the balance and altering the pressure, which can make your system work harder to heat and cool your home. The result is that you’ll spend more to heat or cool your home, plus you’ll damage components like the blower motor.

3. Invest In a Maintenance Plan

Why is it important to have regular maintenance performed on your heating and cooling systems? Many heating and cooling equipment manufacturers specifically require homeowners to have provided qualified regular maintenance to be eligible for full protection under their normal limited warranty. It is also good to keep in mind that almost all HVAC manufacturer warranties cover PARTS ONLY and expire in 5-10 years, whereas well-maintained equipment statistically has a 15-20 year lifespan. Regular maintenance helps protect your warranty rights and wisely protects the longevity of the investment you make in quality heating and cooling equipment.

One way to remember to have your HVAC serviced is to invest in a maintenance plan. When you enroll in CTC’s Comfort Assurance Program (CAP), you will receive specially discounted annual check-ups on your heating and cooling system. Participating helps protect you against more costly repairs and potential emergency service charges in the future. All you have to do is pick up the phone and schedule an appointment.
