What To Do Before Going On Vacation

With the extended weekend ahead, your 4th of July plans might mean taking a few extra steps to keep your home safe and energy efficient while you are away. Here are a few tips on ways to keep your home safe, clean and healthy when you are gone.

Notify the necessary people.
Inform a trusted neighbor or family member, along with your local police department that you wont be home. A neighbor can help keep an eye on your property. Many police departments will also perform courtesy drive-by inspections. If you have home security, you can notify them that you’ll be gone for an extended period of time.

Prepare for possible weather.
If a storm happens to blows in while being away, make sure your property and belongings are safe outside.

Unplug.
Give some of your appliances and electronics a break, except for the refrigerator. Rid your fridge of perishable items that will spoil while you’re gone.

Adjust the thermostat.
Control with a touch. Honeywell's RedLINK™ and ecobee’s smart thermostats offer superb smart technology options that can be as simple or as advanced as your desire for interconnectivity. These super-monitoring features can be especially reassuring to stay in control while you're away on travel or taking charge of your vacation home with finger touch commands to pre-cool or pre-heat in advance of guest arrival.

Plan ahead.
Eliminate post-travel stress by preparing your home in advance. There is nothing better than coming home to a clean house and bed sheets.
